At Montreal Comiccon, we believe in the authenticity of human creativity. Our event celebrates unique perspectives that only human creators with lived experiences, emotional sensitivity, and cultural nuances can bring to creative expression. Accordingly, we are committed to supporting and showcasing creative works produced by humans, including (but not limited to) pencillers, inkers, colourists, writers, actors, directors, painters, sculptors, and musicians.
Montreal Comiccon had implemented this policy put forth in March 2022, and it is incorporated into our Exhibitor Guide and other internal documentation.
Prohibited Works
To uphold this commitment, all exhibitors, guests, panelists, and other contributors must ensure that all displayed, performed, promoted, or sold products are created through human skill and creativity.
Works that have been wholly or substantially generated using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools or algorithms—including, but not limited to, text-to-image tools, AI music composition tools, AI-assisted writing tools or code generation tools—are strictly prohibited (“Prohibited Works”).
Examples of Prohibited Works include, but are not limited to:
- Visual artwork (including images, graphics, video content, or animations) primarily created using AI image-generation tools;
- Books, magazines, comics, or written materials where the text and/or illustrations were produced using AI tools;
- Music, audio, or soundscapes generated by AI;
- AI-generated code sold, displayed, or promoted as original software or tools.
In addition to the exhibition hall floor, any programming, panels, talks, or presentations that utilize, promote, support, or encourage AI-generated creative content are expressly prohibited.
Permitted Uses of AI-Assisted Tools
For clarity, this policy does not prohibit the use of tools that provide minor, non-creative assistance, such as spell-checkers, grammar tools, basic photo filters, image upscalers, accessibility tools, or similar production aids.
Works that have been created using such tools are permitted provided that the core creative process, authorship, and decision-making remain human-driven.
While Montreal Comiccon recognizes the value of AI in many contexts, including within our own internal operations, we choose to stand firmly with human creators when it comes to creative expression presented at our events.
Violations
Any exhibitor found in violation of this Policy may be required to immediately remove the Prohibited Works and may be disqualified from participation at Montreal Comiccon and related events.
Any guest speaker or panel participant found in violation may be removed from programming and may be disqualified from future presenting opportunities at Montreal Comiccon and related events.
Reporting Suspected Prohibited Works
If an attendee suspects that an exhibitor, guest, panelist, or other contributor has used generative AI for a work presented at the event, the concern must be reported directly to Montreal Comiccon by emailing ia-ai@montrealcomiccon.com.
Reports should include, where applicable:
- Booth name and booth number;
- A photo of the suspected work;
- Or, for programming, the panel name, date, time, and room.
Attendees must not approach exhibitors, artists, or panelists directly. Determining whether a work involves generative AI can be complex and requires internal review.
We strongly discourage posting accusations on social media or other public platforms without verification by Montreal Comiccon. Public accusations made without substantiated evidence may be considered harassment under our Harassment Policy.
Please note that Montreal Comiccon will only review complaints related to works presented at our events or works used to promote participation in our events. Complaints regarding works shown at other events or on external platforms unrelated to Montreal Comiccon will not be considered.
